“Cuban Orthodoxy” – The Orthodox Mission Church of Cuba

It was a few days before Christmas and Father Athenagoras of Cuba was serving the community of St. Spyridon on the Southside of Chicago. This small archimandrite, ascetic in appearance, sang with his whole heart throughout the entire Greek-speaking liturgy, but for the great entrance he bellowed with the angels in his native Spanish tongue. The way God has worked through him, in his life and this special place, is something incredible. In the presence of this individual, I sense the great joy for life he emits like light, and how it also affects others. For this man and those spiritual warriors further along on their journey towards theosis, can it be said they have an other worldly understanding, two feet planted on this earth but a nous stretching into the Kingdom of Heaven?

In the case of Father Athenagoras, his life has come a long way from his Columbian roots to the Holy Mountain, where he perfected his Greek language skills. Under the guidance of His Eminence, Metropolitan Athenagoras of Mexico, he strives to attain the heart of Christ and communicate with the most struggling Cuban people. Father Athenagoras travels many miles to spread the good word of his mission, and share his light with all who listen.
