I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  Philippians 4:13

Good morning Prayer Team!

At the University of Notre Dame, as one exits the locker-room of the football team, there is a large sign that reads “Play like a Champion Today.”  Each day, as the team takes the field, each player touches the sign, and gets pumped up to take the field.

Many sports teams and businesses use the idea of a mantra, a large sign that is very visible to all members or employees, who are encouraged to “check in” each day by touching the sign and taking its words to heart.

As you explore the Bible and deepen your prayer life, you will find verses of scripture that really speak to you.  You will find verses that are encouraging and uplifting.  I encourage you to write down some of these phrases on small cards and place them in locations where you can see them throughout the day.

One of my favorite mantras is Philippians 4:13.  I have this verse written on a note-card which is placed where I can see it.  Not only do I see the verse.  Sometimes I make my cross, and like an athlete about to take the field, I actually touch tap the card.  Other times, I say this verse over and over again, especially when in a stressful situation I’m not sure I can handle.

If you are not well versed in the Bible but are looking for a mantra, a great way to find one is on Bible Gateway, just google it, and then type in a word that you’d like to focus on, and Bible Gateway will find that word in the Bible.  For instance, if you want to focus on “honesty” or “wisdom” or “truth”, type in one of those words, see what verses come up and then choose one, write it on a card and place the card where you can see it—on your desk, on a bulletin board, on your refrigerator, in your car.

The mantras become guides and even short prayers for us.

Challenge for today: Find a mantra, write it down on a card, and put it up somewhere where you can see it.

Sample Mantras, to be used as prayers and reminders throughout the day:

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  Philippians 4:13

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:16

Create in me a clean heart o God and renew a right spirit within me.  Psalm 51:10

This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.  Psalm 118:24

Bless the Lord o my soul and all that is within me bless His Holy Name.  Psalm 103:1

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:21

Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.  Matthew 6:34

Here is another good mantra, not from the Bible:

Do what pleases God today!
