Faith and Healing for the Mayan People

Inspired by the OCMC, the Orthodox Christian Network will be featuring the outstanding missionary outreach of this organization who, in the spirit of Christ’s love, offers the Gospel worldwide, without discrimination, and strengthens the capacity of the Orthodox Church to so respond to the missionary calling.  Please join us in raising awareness for their countless missionary endeavors, and we invite you to learn more about the OCMC.

High above the clouds in the Guatemalan mountains lies the village of Aguacate where the OCMC is always welcome. The people of Mayan villages such as Aguacate have “Fallen in love” with Orthodoxy and are becoming one of the most receptive and successful OCMC missionary efforts. Many Mayan people live a very minimal and basically impoverished lifestyle, but they want nothing except the Faith. They really, really, want Orthodoxy!

Along with a true witness of the Gospel, OCMC has taken it upon themselves to provide basic needs for the Mayan people. One team of missionaries was sent on 8/17/2015 to 8/26/2015 to provide some medicals services to the Mayan people of Aguacate.

One member of this team, Susan Washinsky, reported the following:

For four days, we set up the clinic and pharmacy, seeing patient after patient with a range of illnesses, only some of which we could treat. To others we could give them no more than a pack of vitamins and a hug, due to various reasons such as lack of certain medications, dentists, or diagnostic equipment. Some folks had ridden together in the back of a pickup truck for two hours to visit the doctor; others had walked from neighboring villages. Yet as a people, they demonstrated Christ-like love and patience, despite having to travel great distances and wait for the doctor to see them. For this is the Mayan way. They are a gentle people who have a long history of oppression and marginalization, yet most of those whom we met were patient and kind.

The people of Guatemala are very hungry for Orthodoxy and OCMC hopes to continue to serve them. “Two OCMC Short-term Mission Teams will offer healthcare to the Mayan people of Aguacate, Guatemala in 2016. The first team will serve from April 8th to the 17th. The second will depart on August 24th and return on September 4th. Please prayerfully consider serving on one of these teams and witness the growth of the Orthodox Church in Guatemala while providing much needed care to people who would otherwise have little or no access to medical service.” –OCMC.org
