Orthodox Christian Network brings you news of events and people important to the life of the Orthodox Church around the world. OCN highlights media organizations that track these important stories.
On Tuesday, November 1, 2016, Georgetown University’s Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) chapter held a Great Vespers service as the University honored Fr. Constantine White for thirty years of pastoral leadership and devoted service to the Orthodox Christian Chaplaincy and the Georgetown University community.
The Great Vespers service, for the Holy Martyrs Acindynus, Pegasius, Aphthonius, Elpidephorus, and Anempodistus of Persia (commemorated November 2nd) was presided by His Beatitude, Tikhon, Metropolitan of All America and Canada (OCA). Georgetown OCF’s Byzantine choir, led by current senior John Banas, chanted hymns and responses in a variety of languages, including English, Greek, Arabic, Georgian, Slavonic, and Romanian to highlight the pan-Orthodox nature of OCF’s Orthodox Christian ministry.
Following the service, Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia offered final remarks, commending Fr. Constantine for his thirty years as chaplain. President DeGioia also praised the Georgetown OCF for all of its activities and initiatives, including a weekly interfaith sandwich ministry that the OCF chapter organizes to provide over 100 sandwiches every week to the poor and homeless people in the Georgetown community. After these remarks, the entire attendance was invited to a dinner hosted in Fr. Constantine’s honor. His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, as well as current and former OCF students and Campus Ministry staff, offered remarks to express their gratitude and appreciation toward Fr. Constantine. In his remarks, Metropolitan Tikhon said that to love is to ‘show the face of God’ and that Fr. Constantine has truly shown God’s face with his ministry and friendship. Equally touching was Fr. Constantine’s response when he said, “It would not have been possible without you, the students; that I can honestly say that the students have made every single moment of these three decades a joy.”
