St. Raphael of Brooklyn was born in Lebanon on November 20, 1860. He studied in Turkey and Kiev and in 1895 he was sent to New York by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia where he served a small Orthodox community. St. Raphael was consecrated by St. Tikhon of Moscow in New York City in 1904, making him the first Bishop consecrated in North America.
St. Raphael is known for his abandonment of self-will and love for people. He founded the Cathedral of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America (St. Nicholas Cathedral) where he remained Bishop until his death.
Today the memory of blessed Raphael hath shone on us;
For having received Christ’s call, he faithfully took up his cross
and followed Him becoming a fisher of men.
Let us cry aloud to him saying: Rejoice O Father Raphael!
