Philoptochos Makes a Strong Finish!
Recently the work of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society was featured in the Pappas Post in honor of their yearlong commitment to care for the hungry. Their Feeding the Hungry program has been a success and their goal to feed 250,000 meals was not only reached but surpassed!
How did they do it? According to the article, “Some chapters cooked and served the homeless and hungry at their church halls, and some partnered with community-based organizations in soup kitchens and on city streets. This information was shared with chapters seeking to start a new program or to improve or broaden an existing one.”
The women found opportunities through monthly commitments and single events throughout the year.
During the Philoptochos Convention /Clergy-Laity Congress in Nashville, delegates from Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, gave it one more push and rolled up their sleeves to assemble 25,000 meals in partnership with Feeding Children Everywhere. Feeding Children Everywhere is an organization that provides the materials necessary for a nutritional meal, (beans, rice, salt) which volunteers package into individual bags, and box.
By the end of the year, the women worked to feed over 750,000, tripling their original goal!
“The challenge was generously and fervently supported by so many chapters and members, that it met and far exceeded our aspirations to help those in need,” said President Logus. “This inspires us to continue and to do even more.”
