Russian Christmas

Merry Christmas!  No, I didn’t sleep in.

A majority of our Orthodox brothers and sisters celebrate Christmas on January 7th according to the Gregorian Calendar, which is December 25th according to the Julian Calendar.

I grew up trying to explain “Greek Easter,” (otherwise known as Orthodox Easter or Pascha) when our dates for Easter were different from the rest of Christendom.

For many, January 7th is known as, “Russian Christmas,” (Orthodox Christmas or Old Calendar Christmas) and not the day after Epiphany or the Synaxis of Saint John the Baptist.

This YouTube video does a great job explaining why and how Russians celebrate Christmas and New Years.  Enjoy!

$20,000 MATCHING CHALLENGE FOR OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY

Much like public radio, the Orthodox Christian Network relies on the support of our listeners.  Anonymous donors have issued a $20,000 matching challenge in honor of OCN’s 20th Anniversary! For every $1 you give, $2 will be donated! You can send your gift by direct mail, over the phone, or on our website.

Be on the lookout for our new mobile app, “Spark”, to be launched in the near future. The app will raise awareness of Christian persecution worldwide and provide you and millions of Orthodox with different ways to act.
