Rev. Dr. Thomas and Dr. Kyriaki FitzGerald at Orthodox-Catholic Gathering in California
Fr. Thomas and Dr. Kyriaki FitzGerald were honored at the recent meeting of “Orthodox and Catholics Together of Orange County” at St. Kirellos Coptic Orthodox Church in Westminster, California, for their extensive contributions to ecumenical dialogue and interfaith discussions.
They participated in a special ecumenical prayer service which highlighted the importance of Christian reconciliation and the unity of the churches. The service brought together more than 400 clergy and laity from the Orthodox, Western Catholic, Eastern Catholic, Oriental Orthodox, and Assyrian churches. The service was led by twenty priests from these churches and included choirs from seven local parishes. Special reference was made in the prayers to the tragic plight of Christians throughout the Middle East.
Fr. FitzGerald offered the homily at the service and addressed the theme of “Prayer, Wisdom, and Witness.” He spoke about the importance of dialogue and the need for greater unity between the Orthodox and Catholic churches.
At a reception following the service, Fr. FitzGerald also had the opportunity to speak to the participants about the programs and special characteristics of Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.
Fr. Steven Tsichlis, the pastor of St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, California, coordinated the event.
Fr. FitzGerald is Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Holy Cross. Dr. Kyriaki FitzGerald, a licensed psychologist and Adjunct Professor of Theology at Holy Cross, was honored recently as the HCHC Alumni Association’s Alumna of the Year.
