Presvytera Vassi Makris Haros is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Art, Architecture & Planning and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. She is the owner, designer and photographer of V’s Cardbox, In Service and Love. a greeting card company featuring cards with an Orthodox voice. She strongly feels that experiencing the Orthodox Faith through the church’s cyclical calendar of feasts and fasts is a gift that is too often overlooked.
We are called to live holy lives, in the world but not worldly. This Lenten season has been a strong reminder. There were several times we have had to decline invitations or rearrange our schedules to allow the lenten activities to make a mark in our lives. Extra services, changes in eating habits, and opportunities to show charity by sharing our cash, time, and talents have been our focus.
I am not accustomed to living on the Old Calendar and this year, with a very late Easter, this sense of separateness really struck home. It almost seemed as if the world went on without us, and we were left behind. We were picking up seasonal leftovers off the grocery shelves. Ads that used to feature bunnies and pastels are now covered with Mother’s Day sales and summer grilling promotions.
Which explains why I was so thrilled to see a friend’s Facebook post showing a local grocery ad wishing everyone a “Happy Orthodox Easter!” We haven’t been forgotten!
All of Orthodoxy is celebrating this weekend! It’s not just the Greeks, the Russians, the Africans, nor the Romanians… Everyone throughout the world who is a member of the body of Christ in the Holy Orthodox faith will be celebrating that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead!
There are some who are discouraged with the double calendar and reality that for the rest of the year we are united in faith but not in time. I can understand their frustrations. I can also understand the reasons. But I am thankful that the Church has actualized an EIKONOMIA, or exception to the rule, so that we can all celebrate together.
In the days to come, let us all remember that when we sing “Today, is hung upon the cross, He who suspended the earth upon the waters…” and “Today the grave holds Him Who holds creation in His palm.” and “Today Hades cried out groaning: ‘My power has been trampled on…’ ” and finally, “It is the Day of Resurrection!” that we will all be singing together with one united and worldwide Orthodox voice.
To be honest, for these past 7 weeks, it’s been nice sharing time with the Orthodox world.
