WEBINAR: Building a Disability-Friendly Church

Everyone is invited to join a free webinar titled Building a Disability-Friendly Church: 7 Practical, Low-Cost Supports that Make a Big Difference, on Aug 21, 2016, at 4:00 PM (GMT-7:00) Pacific Time (US and Canada)

The webinar is offered through Removing BarriersFAITHTREE MINISTRIES, and a team of clergy, doctors, therapists, educators and parents to help equip our parishes to fully include persons with disability in our churches. This one free hour is jam-packed with practical information. Don’t miss it! And spread the word!

Why a webinar?

The need is huge- 20% of our population has a disability. People with disabilities are considered one of the world’s largest under-represented groups. The Church is largely unprepared for the burgeoning disabled population and in an informal survey of our clergy; they asked us to respond to this enormous need by equipping them with information and best practices to implement in their parishes.

We have experts- The Orthodox Church has multiple experts in the world of disability. There are a number of Orthodox Christians who are leading the way when it comes to disability and inclusion in our churches. We have gathered them together to instruct us on making all our churches more disability-friendly and culturally competent. They include: V. Rev. Fr. Anthony Yazge, Dr. Annie Baghdayan, BCBA-D, PhD, MEd, Jerri Mamey, OTR, Kouri Simon, M.A., CCC-SLP, Shannon Kulp, Certified Educational Therapist, National Institute for Learning Development, Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment.

Plus! We have parents and persons with disability to give us first-hand perspective and insight including Mary Evelyn Smith (writer of the renowned blog “What do you do, dear?”), and Huffington Post contributor and professional copywriter, Beth Hopkins Theilman.

We’ve been commissioned – The Gospel commands that we provide for our brothers and sisters. Throughout Holy Scripture, God instructs us repeatedly to bear one another’s burdens and help anyone who is weak or in need. He also calls us to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all peoples.

It’s so easy- Changing small things can make a huge difference to people with disability. Whether it’s about space, programming, attitudinal barriers or simply how to communicate with persons with disability, we can make a big difference by making small changes. And most of them can be inexpensive, and easy to implement really quickly.
