Orthodox Christian Network brings you news of events and people important to the life of the Orthodox Church around the world. OCN highlights media organizations that track these important stories.
There is a relatively new monastery for women in Maryland that was recently featured in the Frederick News-post. The Sacred Monastery of Saint Nina is led by Abbess Aemiliane and rests on 130 acres in Union Bridge, Maryland, near Washington, DC, and Baltimore.
Saint Nina’s is a monastic community with the Patriarchate of Georgia, under His Grace Bishop Saba of the North American Diocese.
The monastery focuses on prayer, obedience, repentance and hospitality.
The article reads: “In all that they do, the abbess emphasized the sisters’ focus on prayer, for every person and for the salvation of the world.”
Saint Nina’s is described as a welcoming place for children. According to Abbess Aemiliane, “The kids feel at home here, you know. They play, and they love seeing the animals and collecting the eggs.”
The nuns hold a summer camp for 8-15 years old.
It is also an oasis for adults as well. “Sisters will come talk with a group or one-on-one. People will sometimes seek advice for something specific they’re facing.” If you are interested in visiting, call ahead first.
The article continues, “Monasteries like Saint Nina’s aren’t common in the country though their number has grown. The abbess said that among Eastern Orthodox immigrants, young people weren’t encouraged in the past to become monks or to found monasteries because there was a great need for pastors and priests in parishes. Many people who wanted to become nuns or monks went abroad to monasteries in countries such as Greece, Syria and Russia.”
