A Big Dream Begins with a Simple Construction


sighThe faithful in Nyeri, a county in the Central Province of Kenya, were begging His Grace Bishop Neophytos of Nyeri and Mount Kenya to start an Orthodox church, “even under a tree.” But His Grace had a better plan.

Preferring to start small communities with a church, even in the simplest forms, he blessed the construction of St.s Nektarios and Moses Orthodox Church. This mission church, constructed to hold 150 people was started by eight faithful members willing to travel as far as an hour to attend services.  This three-week construction project was completed on May 29, 2016, with their first Divine Liturgy.

Week One: Calling the Faithful

We made phone calls of all the orthodox faithful living in and around the Nyeri town. We also worked on leasing the land for three years and paying it through all the legal process. It was a


Week Two: Laying a Foundation

13254117_10154516794049026_8688166973069194636_nIn the initial stages His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa came to Nyeri and saw the site. He was touched and he took a small icon of Saint Nektarios and cemented on the cornerstone of the altar, blessing the project with these words, “May Saint Nektarios sanctify this place and may this church grow into a big metropolis center.”



Week Three: Construction

Construction began following His Grace Bishop Neophytos’ enthronement. The church is a simple structure of walls, roofing and iron sheets.
