Listen Now. “The illnesses of the soul and the spirit are in many ways similar to the illnesses of the body,” says Fr. Andrew Demotses, pastor emeritus of Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody, MA. He joins Fr. Chris to teach us about demon possession and exorcism. Much of what we know or think we know about these topics comes from pop culture, not the church. Fr. Andrew brings us an Orthodox perspective on this real, but rare, spiritual illness and how it can be healed.
Fr. Andrew talks first about discerning between demonic possession and mental illness. He explains what Orthodoxy teach us about evil that is present in our lives, and how that differs from demonic possession. Fr. Chris and Fr. Andrew recall their pastoral experiences with possession. Both agree that it is rare, but Fr. Andrew notes that this is because the devil can overcome most of us in subtler ways, without such a direct attack. Food for thought!
Fr. Andrew and Fr. Chris also talk about the “evil eye,” and the “mati” amulets so often seen in the Mediterranean and Middle East, and here in America, too. Hear what the Orthodox Church says about the evil eye, now and in its history.
