Orthodox Christian Network brings you news of events and people important to the life of the Orthodox Church around the world. OCN highlights media organizations that track these important stories.
Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, DC will be hosting a Philoptochos Lenten Retreat March 14-15, 2016, featuring Father Stephen Powley. Fr. Stephen Powley is the priest of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Pueblo, CO. He served as a Prison Chaplain for almost 26 years until his retirement in August of 2010. As a Prison Chaplain he has served in every security level from minimum to maximum. After graduating from seminary, Fr. Stephen became an Evangelical Protestant pastor. As he and his wife continued their spiritual journey, they were led to the Orthodox Faith and were convinced beyond any shadow of doubt that the Orthodox Church was indeed the very same Church that Christ had founded on this earth.
The OCN is pleased to support Saint Sophia and Fr. Powley in what will certainly be a moving event. In 1984 Fr. Powley was called by God to become the first Prison Chaplain in Douglas, Arizona. There he realized his job was to love the prisoners, not to judge them on what they had done, and to be there in any way he could to help them. Fr. Powley will speak on his life, ministry and the amazing things he has seen God do within prison walls. Please join Saint Sophia in welcoming Fr. Powley and attend all or part of the retreat.
