Hellenic College Honored George M. Marcus with Doctor of Humanities Degree

Brookline, MA – On Saturday during its 74th commencement Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology honored real estate developer, philanthropist and restauranteur George M. Marcus with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for contributions to his Hellenic heritage and the Greek Orthodox church.

Mr. Marcus told the graduates he credits his success to being bold and innovative when he first started out in business. “Open up your mind,” he urged the graduates. “It’s all right in front of your nose every single day.”

Mr. Marcus was born in 1941 on the Greek island of Euboea. He and his family emigrated to the United States when Mr. Marcus was just four years old and settled in San Francisco. Half a century later he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, recognizing his great contributions to America.

Mr. Marcus received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from San Francisco State University. The school named him Alumnus of the Millennium in 1999 and later awarded him an honorary doctorate. Mr. Marcus is the founder of Marcus & Millichap Company and has been its chairman since 1971. He is also Chairman of Essex Property Trust, a publicly held multi-family real estate investment trust.

In addition to his real estate business, Mr. Marcus is a restaurateur. He is the majority owner of two renowned Greek restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area which count President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden among its admirers. Authentic cuisine from both restaurants was featured during the 2014 White House Greek Independence Day which Mr. Marcus attended.

Mr. Marcus was recently honored by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco with the Theofanis Economides Award for his work on behalf of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Most notable among his many honors is the high Offikion of Archon Exarchos in 1991 by the late Archbishop Iakovos of blessed memory. Mr. Marcus is a committed member of Leadership 100, co-founder of Elios Society, a charitable organization for the promotion of Hellenic culture, and the founding chairman of the National Hellenic Society, an organization established to create a lasting network of distinguished Greek Americans that will preserve the Hellenic heritage.
