It’s the Season to Give and Get Creative

I love the Christmas holiday season!  There is a bit more cheer in the air, to fill the dark nights.  Neighbors tend to be a bit more generous and grateful.  The thought of Christmas keeps me warm.  You might think it’s too soon to reflect on Christmas, but with only 8 weekends left until the Big Day, there isn’t much time if you are planning an event or making your gifts.  I happen to be planning an event.

Our Philoptochos is preparing a Christmas Tables Charity Dinner.  Philoptochos is the philanthropic ministry of our parish and part of a national charitable organization in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. Our Christmas Tables Charity Dinner (we still can’t think of a shorter name to call it) is an opportunity for women to have fun decorating a formal table with their personal china and stemware.   It’s a great chance to finally use the china we’ve been saving for special occasions. Does it get a little competitive?  I think a little competition is a part of the fun!  It’s a night with a lot of fun for a good cause.

This year we are sponsoring a local family experiencing financial distress due to medical bills.  Our event committee had to choose from a list of recipients, and we decided that a personal donation would make a bigger impact to a family as compared to a large non-profit organization.  Our town is very supportive of our local charities.  We are excited about making a difference in someone’s life.

Do you have a favorite charity you donate to during the holidays?  Consider your local Philoptochos chapter.  They serve the poor all year long and your donation can go a long way.    Click here to learn more about the National Philoptochos Society.
