Why was Jesus baptized?

In this episode of “Beauty Will Save The World,” Fr. Barnabas Powell explores the deeper significance of the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. Theologians have puzzled over why Jesus, the Son of God, submitted to baptism from John the Baptizer. Fr. Powell points out that Jesus did not need John’s “Baptism of Repentance.” Rather, he was baptized “to fulfill all righteousness.” Jesus did not need baptism. The water needed Jesus! By his baptism, Jesus restores water to its original intent, to truly clean, to truly refresh, and to truly satisfy our thirst.
