Light the Path, Philoptochos Ministry

The large photo board with pictures of Seminarians students, above, is displayed proudly at the Light the Path events, which took place recently in November and December before Christmas. The Ladies of Philoptochos Society from the Metropolis of San Francisco, has been leading this remarkable ministry for over 25 years. The Bishop Anthony Philoptochos Student Aid Endowment Fund (BAPSAEF) was established through the spiritual vision and foresight of His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony, of blessed memory, and the support of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. This vision and hope continues under the spiritual leadership of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos.

These Christmas luncheons represent a culmination of fundraiser events, which occur throughout the year across the Metropolis and in most of the churches. They take place in both Southern and Northern California, and bring together Philoptochos members, supporters from many of the churches in the Metropolis, and some guest speakers. These guest speakers, a few of the seminarians and students supported by the endowment fund, get the opportunity to thank everyone in person and share their story and future plans.

The connection with the students goes beyond these events, though, as Philoptochos Chapters across the Metropolis also participate in adopting every single one of the students and are in contact with them throughout the year. These warm relationships help strengthen the bonds of students with the churches where they will be serving upon graduation.

Recently on Come Receive the Light from November 6, 2015, Fr. Chris Metropulos spoke with Jeannie Ranglas, President of the Metropolis of San Francisco Philoptochos Society, about ‘Light the Path’ and the Bishop Anthony Philoptochos Student Aid Endowment Fund.

This fund is a tangible effort to secure the future of our faith and culture in this Metropolis, for it is through this Endowment Fund that our future priests, educators and pastoral assistants are supported both financially and spiritually in their education.

The Metropolis of San Francisco Ladies Philoptochos Society, totaling roughly 4,000 individual ladies across the Metropolis, has raised over 2 million dollars in the past 25 years. Every year, funds are distributed to the school to help pay down student loan debts.

The primary mission is to provide financial assistance for seminarians and students from the Metropolis of San Francisco attending Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and Hellenic College, in Brookline, Massachusetts.  Each Philoptochos Chapter throughout the Metropolis supports the BAPSAEF through annual commitments. Donations are also made by individuals to assist in reaching the goal.

In 2011, the BAPSAEF fundraising program was enhanced and the Light the Path: A Christmas Luncheon was established. Light the Path: A Christmas Luncheon is held annually in Northern and Southern California. All proceeds from these events directly support seminarians and students.
