Lutheran Seminary Returns 9th Century Bible to Orthodox Church

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago was contacted by the Orthodox Church in hopes of collecting ancient manuscripts which were stolen from Kosintza Monastery near Drama, Greece almost a century before.

The small seminary had acquired the 9th century New Testament also known as codex 1424, decades before.  It was gifted to the school by Mr. and Mrs. Gruber in the early 60’s for serious scholars and other institutions.

Thanks to the efforts of New York attorney George A. Tsougarakis, letters have been sent across the globe to return these sacred documents to the Orthodox Church.  The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago has been the first to respond and hopes to set a good example.

“In the spirit of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday,” Archbishop Demetrios said in a prepared statement, “our hearts are filled with gratitude to our Lutheran brothers and sisters for this generous and kind gesture.”

The seminary is happy to return the original book and has also digitally photographed every page to preserve it in perpetuity.

The full story can be read in the Chicago Tribune.
