Born and raised in Indiana as the son of a doctor, the late Roger Hunt was gifted in writing, Roger devoted most of his talents in the field of music as composer, arranger, and producer of both live and recorded music since the 70’s. He created music (and various music-and-sound-related productions) for OCN and others; and, having converted to the Orthodox Faith in 2010, he enjoyed writing the blog series “Musings of a Grateful Convert” for The Sounding. May his Memory Be Eternal.
It belongs to the children.
During this Great Lent, I have the privilege of chanting during some of the services. Weeknight services are not really well-attended in general, but there is almost always a special visitor.
My priest is very young and has a beautiful family, which includes a two-year-old son. Many times the Presvytera will bring the small children to the service and this little fellow will sit in the rear of the church, often really making his presence known. It is not unusual for him to cry out loudly to his father (i.e., our priest) while the service is in full swing.
I mused to myself: if Father would ask me whether I felt distracted or perturbed by the vocalizations of his little boy, I would quickly reply, “Of course not!”
On further reflection, it am reminded that right now—as in always—in Heaven, the Angels and all the Saints are on their faces before Christ our God, worshipping Him intently. Meanwhile, we are “in the back of the Church”, crying out to our Father, loudly expressing our personality with all its requests, doubts, fears and anxieties. I am guessing there is quite a bit of noise during the Great Worship Service!
God forgive me if I’m wrong, but I really don’t think our “disruptive vocalizations” bother the Angels of Heaven any more than I was perturbed in my earthly situation. Perhaps it is because they know, as we supposedly do, that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to children and really all who approach God with such directness, honesty, and reckless joy.
“Thy Kingdom come…on earth as it is in Heaven”.
