Presvytera Vassi Makris Haros is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Art, Architecture & Planning and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. She is the owner, designer and photographer of V’s Cardbox, In Service and Love. a greeting card company featuring cards with an Orthodox voice. She strongly feels that experiencing the Orthodox Faith through the church’s cyclical calendar of feasts and fasts is a gift that is too often overlooked.
It has allowed me to serve God by aiding those who need the work of our hands.
The Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF), our sister ministry, is the official collegiate campus ministry program under the Assembly of Canonical Bishops of the United Stated of America. Charged with connecting Orthodox college students to Christ and His Church they have developed a program called Real Break. Real Break takes place during the Spring Break season for student who want more.
Nicholas (Niko Wilk), a senior studying Architecture at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, participate in a combined event on March 7-12, 2016, in New Orleans. In his reflection on the OCF website, he writes.
“Our mission to serve with IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities) began quickly through the exposure of the distraught neighborhoods of damaged and demolished properties that align the highway. Hurricane Katrina has still left a mark on the city, which had given us the incentive as to why this trip is more than a vacation. Visiting the Lower Ninth Ward, the neighborhood that experienced the most flooding, felt like a scene from a movie because of the destroyed properties and learning how the government had to step in to discover deaths within each home (marking the numbers on the front doors). Glory to God, not all of the neighborhoods had suffered much, such as the Downtown and thriving French Quarter, but the pain that the citizens had experienced was evidently traumatizing.”
Real Break opportunities included:
• Constantinople: February 26 – March 5, 2016
• Romania: March 4-12, 2016
• Jerusalem: March 4-12, 2016
• New Orleans: March 7-12, 2016
• Alaska: March 12-19, 2016
• Cleveland: March 14-18, 2016
• Guatemala: March 19-26, 2016
• Thessaloniki: March 18-26, 2016
It’s too late to join Real Break 2016 this year, but plans are already in the works for 2017. More information will be available in September/October at the start of the new school year. Keep an eye out for these great opportunities.
