Youth and young adults play a vital role in the life of the Orthodox Church in America. The OCA’s Department of the Youth, Young Adult, and Campus Ministry works to train clergy, parents, and youth ministers in various aspects of ministry with, to, and by young people.
The Department also encourages the development of campus ministries and Orthodox Christian Fellowships on campuses across North America and coordinates its efforts on a pan-Orthodox level. In light of this good work, we feel compelled to share some of the OCA’s uplifting experiences, and ministry efforts.
One of these ministries is a youth (ages 18-30) pilgrimage to Alaska this coming summer. Archpriest Mikel Bock of the OCA will be leading the team from Anchorage to Eklunta in order to help rehabilitate the historic Saint Nicholas Church and cemetery. Father Mikel is the Archpriest assigned to the St. Nicholas parish in Eklunta.
After the rehabilitation work, the youth will have the opportunity to explore the Alaskan frontier, its beautiful Orthodox life, ecclesiastical practices, parish life, and historic churches.
“These trips were common during my college years and provided formative experiences for so many in the Church,” said Andrew Boyd, OCA Youth Director. “It is an immense privilege to be able to serve the historic Church in Alaska, the mother of us all, and a great joy to revive this important program.”
