Presvytera Vassi Makris Haros is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Art, Architecture & Planning and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. She is the owner, designer and photographer of V’s Cardbox, In Service and Love. a greeting card company featuring cards with an Orthodox voice. She strongly feels that experiencing the Orthodox Faith through the church’s cyclical calendar of feasts and fasts is a gift that is too often overlooked.
I recently read an article by CNN’s David McKenzie and Briana Duggan about a bus in Kenya that was stopped by terrorists. The gunmen ambushed the vehicle and called for the Muslims to exit in order to separate and kill the Christians.
But the Muslim passengers refused.
The article stated that “They gave the Christian women their hijabs and helped others hide behind bags in the bus… They told them, ‘If you want to kill us, then kill us. There are no Christians here.’”
Was this a denial of Christ for the Christians or courage to show love by the Muslims?
It reminded me of the time the Germans went to Zakynthos and Metropolitan Chrysostomos and Mayor Lucas Carrer were ordered to submit a list with the names of all the Jews that lived on the island. Instead of surrendering the Jews, they returned with an envelope containing just two names: the bishop’s and the mayor’s.
The Muslims and the Christians have lived in peace throughout history. There is even a plaque outside the monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai by Mohammed declaring protection to the Christians.
But there have been bolts of terror as well, where fanatics have beheaded and tortured Christians or Nazis collected and gassed the Jews.
I pray the terror ends soon. I pray we can stand and protect one another like the women in the bus. It’s time to stop the madness!
