Presvytera Vassi Makris Haros is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Art, Architecture & Planning and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. She is the owner, designer and photographer of V’s Cardbox, In Service and Love. a greeting card company featuring cards with an Orthodox voice. She strongly feels that experiencing the Orthodox Faith through the church’s cyclical calendar of feasts and fasts is a gift that is too often overlooked.
Earlier today I came across a video about a group of former Muslim men who converted to an Evangelical Christian group. They call themselves Koosha Las Vegas. In the video we see “preachers” have strayed from their street corners and actually began preaching in Catholic churches!
They interrupted the sermon with “Idolatry is anti-Christ.” “Repent, return to Jesus.” “The Pope is Satan.” “Idols aren’t going to save you.”
I know there are many of our readers who might not see that as a problem, justifying that they entered a Catholic Church and not an Orthodox Church. But the issues Evangelicals have with Catholicism are the same they have with Orthodoxy. They could just as easily come into an Orthodox church and preach against our icons and Eucharist, claiming them to be idols.
Their tactics are aggressive.
Do churches need to hire bouncers? Will they have to hire security? Does your parish have a protocol for these types of disturbances?
What would you do if they came into your church during a service to “evangelize” you?
