Why Do We Call the Virgin Mary the Theotokos?

Orthodox Christianity can be confusing and overwhelming for inquirers. To add the the confusion, Orthodoxy makes use of, what seems to be, an entirely different vocabulary. Words like nous, asceticism, and theosis sound eerie and unfamiliar. Most inquirers will notice one word, or title, in particular: Theotokos. What does this title mean and why do Orthodox Christians use it when referring to the Virgin Mary? Take two minutes to watch the the video above, which seeks to explain the title and why it is important.

And be sure to let us know what you think! Do you think the video will help someone you know?

The above video is part 5 in an ongoing series from Theoria entitled, Welcome to the Orthodox Church.
