Who will be attending the Holy and Great Council?

Have you wondered who would be attending the Holy and Great Council on Pentecost?

In this video, Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis, Archdeacon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, explains who will be attending this historic and holy event.

Limited Seating

Most people are surprised to hear that the Holy and Great Council will not be attended by every single Orthodox bishop.  In fact, they aren’t all invited. Each Autocephalous (self-governing) Church will send 25 bishops; the primate and 24 other.

In previous councils, only 5 Churches attended: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem.

In 2016 we have 14 autocephalous churches: Church of Constantinople, Church of Alexandria, Church of Antioch, Church of Jerusalem, Church of Russia, Church of Serbia, Church of Romania, Church of Bulgaria, Church of Georgia, Church of Cyprus, Church of Greece, Church of Poland, Church of Albania, Church of Czech Lands and Slovakia. Each one is sending 25 bishops.

Doing the math: 14 Churches x 25 Bishops = 350. Add 6 consultants and 3 assistants for each Church equals another 126. That’s almost 500 people.
