The highest authority within the Church itself is the Ecumenical Council. During the early period of the Christian Church, many councils were held to establish once and for all the basic beliefs of the Christian Church. Hundreds of Church Fathers gathered in many placed during a four-century period to settle many problems which arose from within the Church Community. Church laws were established. The date on which Easter should be celebrated was fixed. False teachings were exposed and the truth of the Church was preserved.
