The Metropolis of San Francisco with the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos and the collaboration of OCN will be offering three seminars in the “Art of Preaching”. Three outstanding speakers have been selected to offer distinct yet connected messages on how to offer a profound sermon in our times. These seminars are free and open to Orthodox Christian clergy as well as students studying theology in seminaries and universities.
Seminar 1: Why should we preach at all? Are we having an effect on the spiritual growth of the flock entrusted to us?
Friday, 3/11 at 1:00pm PST with Hank Hanegraaff.
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. – 2 Tim 4: 1-5
Hank Hanegraaff serves as president and chairman of the board of the North Carolina–based Christian Research Institute and OCN Board Member. He is also host of the nationally syndicated Bible Answer Man broadcast as well as the Hank Unplugged podcast.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading Christian authors and apologists, Hank is deeply committed to equipping Christians to be so familiar with truth that when counterfeits loom on the horizon, they recognize them instantaneously. Through his live call-in radio broadcast, Hank equips Christians to mine the Bible for all its wealth and answers questions on the basis of careful research and sound reasoning. And through the Hank Unplugged podcast, he interviews today’s most significant Christian leaders, apologists, and thinkers.
Hank is the author of more than twenty books, with more than a million copies in print. 2019 saw the release of his magnum opus Truth Matters, Life Matters More: The Unexpected Beauty of an Authentic Christian Life. For the greater part of his life and ministry, Hank’s clarion call was to communicate Christian truth — because truth matters! The discovery that truth matters but life matters more has cultivated in him a deep commitment to communicating why life matters more and how the life that matters more can be experienced today — now — in intimate union with the Triadic One. Hank and his wife, Kathy, live in Charlotte, North Carolina, are parents to twelve children, and were received into the Orthodox Church through chrismation in 2017.
Seminar 2: What does it take to craft a salvific message for our people and those who seek to know Orthodox Christianity?
Friday, 4/1 at 1:00 pm PST with Fr. Barnabas Powell. Register Now
For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. – 1 Corinthians 1:21
Faith Encouraged is the prayerful ministry of Fr. Barnabas Powell. Fr. Barnabas, a convert to the Holy Orthodox Christian Church, entered the Orthodox Church in November of 2001. In the Orthodox Christian faith, Fr. Barnabas has found a dynamic and disciplined lifestyle of faith centered on the miracle of God becoming flesh so that man might become “like Christ.” This journey to theosis cannot be accomplished without a purposeful and intentional practice of the healing disciplines of the Orthodox faith. It is learning this lifestyle that overcomes the debilitating effects of a self-centered life, and becoming free to become by grace what Christ is by nature.
He is the author of “A Faith Encouraged” and the speaker and producer of the 16 part introduction to Orthodoxy video series “A Journey to Fullness” now being used by over 200 parishes across the country to help people discover and embrace the Orthodox Christian Faith. Fr. Barnabas is the parish priest at Sts. Raphael, Nicholas, & Irene Greek Orthodox Church in Cumming, GA. He and his wife, Connie, have two daughters.
Seminar 3: Identifying Foundational Resources for Crafting Homilies Based on the Byzantine Gospel Lectionary System.
