Spyridoula Fotinis, James Carras, Kenny Kidd join Fr. Chris Metropulos to talk about the main drivers to homelessness in America, effective solutions at the community level, and how Orthodox parishes can and should be involved.
Recent studies show that on any given night, more than 600,000 people are homeless in America, which doesn’t account for thousands more living on the edge of homelessness, or with unstable and insufficient resources. There are many causes, but as Orthodox Christians, we can be a part of the solution.
James Carras is a parishioner at St. Demetrios Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is a community economic development consultant and a lecturer at the Harvard Kennedy School where he teaches courses on equitable development, housing policy and development finance.
Spyridoula Fotinis serves as the Director of Inter-Parish Associations for the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the USA. Spyridoula recently finished her studies in Finland on how social policy can end homelessness. These studies were inspired by her former advocacy work to end homelessness at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
Kenneth Kidd is the Executive Director of FOCUS North America. He has served at FOCUS since 2017, and before that, served as a Development Officer with the Orthodox Christian Mission Center for 11 years. Kenny is a social worker by education, a West Virginia native, and was Chrismated at Holy Spirit Antiochian Church in Huntington, WV in 1997.
