Sermon originally given on the third Sunday after Pascha

Christ is Risen! Truly, He is Risen!

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, as we gather today to observe the third Sunday after the glorious celebration of Pascha, or Easter, we are reminded once again of the transformative power of the Resurrection. This period following the Resurrection of our Lord is grounded in reflection, joy, and a deep reaffirmation of our faith. Our journey through these weeks allows us not only to commemorate but also to integrate the Resurrection’s profound meaning into our daily lives.

Today, I invite you to meditate on three essential points:

  1. Understanding the Resurrection: Theological and Personal Significance
  2. Living as a Resurrection People: Practical and Spiritual Implications
  3. Spreading the Easter Message: Our Mission and Witness

1. Understanding the Resurrection: Theological and Personal Significance

At the heart of our faith lies the bedrock conviction that Jesus Christ rose from the dead, conquering death and bestowing eternal life upon all who believe. The Resurrection is not merely an extraordinary historical event; it is the cornerstone of our Christian faith and theology. It carries profound theological significance and has deeply personal implications for each of us.

Theological Significance:

The Apostle Paul’s epistle to the Corinthians emphasizes, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17). This powerful assertion highlights that without the Resurrection, the entire structure of Christian theology collapses. The Resurrection validates Jesus’ divine nature, His teachings, and His redemptive work. It confirms that Jesus is the Messiah, sent by God to redeem humanity and restore the broken relationship between God and mankind.
Moreover, the Resurrection demonstrates God’s ultimate victory over sin, death, and the devil. Christ’s triumph over the grave signifies the inauguration of the new creation, an era where life prevails over death and hope over despair. It is the first fruits of the resurrection to come, assuring us that we too will share in this victory if we remain faithful.

Personal Significance:

On a personal level, the Resurrection offers us immense hope and comfort. It reassures us that death is not the end but a passage to eternal life in God’s presence. This hope should profoundly influence how we live our lives. In moments of suffering, pain, or loss, the Resurrection assures us that these are temporary states, overshadowed by the promise of eternal life and the boundless love of God. It calls us to live with an eternal perspective, valuing spiritual growth and our relationship with God above all else.
The Resurrection also calls each of us to a transformation of life. The old self is crucified with Christ, and we are invited to rise to new life in Him. This new life is characterized by the virtues of love, humility, forgiveness, and compassion. It challenges us to leave behind sin and embrace a life that reflects Christ’s love and holiness.

2. Living as a Resurrection People: Practical and Spiritual Implications

Understanding the Resurrection in a theological and personal sense is foundational, but it is imperative that we translate this understanding into how we live. As Orthodox Christians, we are called to embody the reality of the Resurrection in our daily lives, allowing it to shape our actions, attitudes, and relationships.

Joyful Witness:

One of the most evident ways to live as Resurrection people is to be filled with joy. This joy is not superficial but deeply rooted in the assurance of Christ’s victory over death. It is a joy that should permeate our daily lives and interactions, becoming a testament to the transformation brought about by the Resurrection. When others see our unshakable joy, even amidst trials and tribulations, they witness the transformative power of the Resurrection.

Transformation of Daily Life:

Living as a Resurrection people means allowing the power of the Resurrection to transform every aspect of our lives. This requires us to turn away from sin and pursue holiness. It means living a life of integrity, generosity, and service. We must continually renew our minds and hearts through prayer, Scripture, and participation in the sacraments, allowing the Holy Spirit to work in and through us.
Our relationships should reflect the love and forgiveness exemplified by Christ. We are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, to forgive those who hurt us, and to build bridges of reconciliation and peace. Our families, workplaces, and communities should be marked by the presence of Christ’s love, shaping how we interact and serve one another.

Engagement in the Church Community:

The Church, as the Body of Christ, plays a crucial role in nurturing our Resurrection life. Participation in the liturgical life of the Church, especially the Divine Liturgy, is essential. It is in the Eucharist that we encounter the risen Christ in a profound and intimate way. The sacraments nourish us, strengthen our faith, and equip us to live out the Resurrection in our daily lives . Regular confession, prayer, and engagement in the Church’s liturgical and community life deepens our connection to Christ and one another, reinforcing the communal and transformative aspect of our faith.

3. Spreading the Easter Message: Our Mission and Witness

The joy and power of the Resurrection are not experiences meant to be kept private but rather shared with the world. As Resurrection people, we are commissioned to spread the Good News of Christ’s victory over death, echoing the angel’s proclamation at the tomb, “He is not here; He has risen!” (Matthew 28:6).

Evangelism and Witness:

Evangelism, in its truest sense, means sharing the good news of the Resurrection with those around us. This can be done through our words, actions, and the way we live our lives. Every act of kindness, every word of hope, every display of Christ-like love is a testament to the resurrection power at work within us.
Witnessing begins within our immediate circles—our family, friends, and neighbors. Demonstrating the values of our faith through love, patience, and understanding paves the way for deeper conversations about Christ. We must be ready to share the hope that lies within us, engaging others in discussions about faith and the life-transforming message of the Resurrection.

Service and Outreach:

Another critical aspect of spreading the Easter message is through service. Reflecting Jesus’ love for humanity means reaching out to those in need—the poor, the sick, the marginalized, and the disenfranchised. Acts of compassion and service not only provide tangible help but also embody the love and hope of the Risen Christ. Service is a powerful testimony to the world that Christ is alive and working through His people.

Outreach should extend beyond the confines of our local communities. As the Orthodox Church, we are part of a global family, and we are called to support mission efforts that bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth. This global reach reminds us of the universality of the Resurrection and our mission to bring its hope to every corner of the world.

Living the Resurrection in Public Life:

We are also called to bring the values of the Resurrection into the public sphere. This means advocating for justice, peace, and ethical standards in our societies. Our Christian witness should shine in our workplaces, schools, and social arenas. By standing up for what is right and just, by being voices of reason and compassion, we reflect the transformative power of the Gospel in the world.

Respecting Our Faith Through Art and Culture:

Art and culture offer unique avenues for expressing and sharing the message of the Resurrection. Through music, painting, literature, and other forms of artistic expression, we can communicate the profound beauty and hope of our faith. These creative expressions can touch hearts in ways that words alone may not, opening up new pathways for evangelization and reflection on the mystery of the Resurrection.

Conclusion

Beloved in Christ, as we continue our journey through this Paschal season, let us remember and celebrate the victory of our Lord’s Resurrection with renewed fervor and commitment. By understanding its deep theological and personal significance, we anchor our faith in the reality of Christ’s triumph over sin and death. By living as Resurrection people, we allow this transformative power to reshape our daily lives, relationships, and communities. And by spreading the Easter message, we fulfill our mission to share the hope and joy of the Resurrection with a world in need.

Christ is Risen! Truly, He is Risen!

Let this proclamation not only resonate in our hearts and minds but also manifest in our actions and witness. May the joy and hope of the Resurrection inspire us to live fully for Christ and to draw others to the life-giving light of His Resurrection. Amen.
