In The Dying Citizen, Victor Davis Hanson writes of a troubling poll concerning the lack of understanding many have about what it means to be a citizen of the United States. Hanson reminds us that citizenship is not indestructible—“the more it includes everyone, the less it can protect anyone.” He warns that we are becoming a nation of residents as opposed to citizens, and as a result we are losing enthusiasm for those who have preserved our freedom.
