Why are young men taking a particular interest in the Orthodox Church? And more importantly, how should we respond?
Much has been said in recent years about the increase in young male converts to traditional Christianity in general, and the Orthodox Church in particular. Some have responded to this development with excitement, others with trepidation about the “red pill” internet environments some of these young men are coming from, and what that might mean for their presence in the community.
In this episode with Fr. Samuel Davis, we take an honest look at why these young men are taking an interest in the Church, and how they can be successfully welcomed and catechized both for their own benefit, and the benefit of the Church community.
We talk about reaching young men through familiar themes of discipline and self-improvement, the importance of ongoing sponsor relationships and mentorship, and how the zeal of a well-supported convert can invigorate others.
Fr. Samuel Davis is a convert, a former athlete and a former member of the United States military, and he has shepherded dozens of young men from various backgrounds into the Church. He serves as assistant priest at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in New York City and hosts The Black American Orthodox Experience on OCN.
